Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a town, a hill station, a popular skiing destination. The town is situated in the Pirpanjal range in the western Himalayas. Gulmarg literally means the meadow of flowers. Gulmarg is situated at an altitude of 2730 meters above sea level and has a gently sloping topography. Gulmarg attracts various tourists due to its natural beauty. Gulmarg offer world's highest Cable Car (optional) that reach upto 14000 ft. Originally named Gaurimarg ("the fair one") by shepherds in honor of the Hindu goddess Parvati, the resort was renamed Gulmarg (“meadow of flowers”) by Sultan Yusuf Shah of the Chak Dynasty who frequented visit the place with his queen Habba khatoon in the 16th century who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers.. Mughal King Yousuf Shah Chak, Kashmir King Zain-ul-Abidin ruled the kingdom of Gulmarg. In the early 20th century, The Maharaja Palace was built by Maharaja Hari Singh, which has eventually become a tourist attraction.

In 1927, the British discovered the meadow of flowers, during their colonial rule. The Ski Club of India was set up in the same year to promote adventure sports. Annually, two major skiing events are held, one during Christmas and the other during Easter. In the present times, Gulmarg has been declared the Winter Games Capital of India by Winter Games Federation of India and boasts of the highest and the longest ski slope in Asia.

Best Time to Visit Gulmarg

If you are a nature enthusiast who loves the heat, the months April, May and June are the best months for a visit. However, If skiing is what you are looking forward to, December to mid March are recommended.

Gulmarg Weather

The temperature in summers is very pleasant ranging from 13 to 26 degrees Celcius.(April-June),and the temperature in winters falls as low as -4 degrees and do not rise above 11-12 degrees Celsius. (October-March).
